Open Rank Position in Experimental High Energy Physics (tenure-track/tenured)

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Tufts University (Medford, MA, USA; https://as.tufts.edu/physics) invites qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-stream professorship position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in the field of experimental High-Energy Physics (HEP) at the Energy Frontier. The successful candidate will join the Tufts ATLAS group and assume teaching duties and service, with a target start date of September 1, 2026. We encourage candidates with demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, mentoring, and community development to apply. The Tufts Physics and Astronomy Department consists of seventeen tenured or tenure-track faculty and has strong research programs in High Energy Physics, condensed matter physics, cosmology, quantum information, astrophysics, and physics education research. The HEP group conducts active and well-funded research consisting of LHC collider and accelerator-based neutrino programs that provide research opportunities to undergraduates and graduate students. Current activities of the Tufts-in-ATLAS group include maintenance, operation, and development of the muon end-cap alignment system, QCD precision measurements, searches for dark matter, and development of AI algorithms applied to various aspects of data analysis in HEP.

To qualify for the position, the candidate must have a Ph.D. in experimental High Energy Physics at the Energy Frontier with strong experience in analyzing Large Hadron Collider data. We expect the candidate to generate research grants after arrival at Tufts. The successful candidate will supervise graduate-student thesis research for the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees, and undergraduate senior honors thesis projects. The Department of Physics & Astronomy places a strong value in educational excellence, so candidates should show promise in teaching undergraduate and graduate physics courses and a commitment to evidence-informed development as a teacher. For an appointment at the tenured level, prior experience in teaching is essential, and evidence of innovation in teaching is welcomed.

All applications are submitted via Interfolio, at apply.interfolio.com/174045. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae with publications, a research plan, a statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy, and must arrange for at least three confidential letters of reference to be directly uploaded to Interfolio. Neither the research plan nor the teaching statement should exceed 3 pages. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by November 15, 2025. However, applications received after that date will be considered until the position is filled.

Please contact the department manager, Elizabeth Hammond (email: Elizabeth.Hammond@tufts.edu), with any questions. All offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a background check.

Tufts University is committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation that reflects each candidate’s experience, expertise, responsibilities, and performance. The pay offered within the posted range will be determined based on a variety of factors such as (but not limited to) the individual’s education and experience, discipline, rank, internal equity, and budgetary considerations. Ranges represent full-time 9- or 12- month base salaries.

Tufts University, founded in 1852, prioritizes quality teaching, highly competitive basic and applied research, and a commitment to active citizenship locally, regionally, and globally.
