Job content supplemental explanation: The Department of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies (GIS) at Hosei University is looking for experienced academic skills instructors. The academic skills courses provide academic grounding for success in our liberal arts curriculum. All courses are taught entirely in English.
The department is looking to hire at least two instructors to fill the currently vacant courses:
- Two 100-minute courses per week in Academic Writing Skills in the spring semester
- One 100-minute course per week in Reading Skills in the spring semester
- Three 100-minute courses per week in Reading Skills in the fall semester
A successful candidate may be asked to teach up to three courses. The specific courses will be finalised after discussion with the successful candidates. All academic study skills classes take place in the morning, in either the first period (08:50-10:30) or the second period (10:40-12:20).
Brief description of the courses:
The Academic Writing Skills classes introduce the formal structures and styles of academic writing. Students learn how to properly structure an essay and become familiar with academic vocabulary and conventions. The courses build confidence and competence in writing, culminating in students researching and writing a formal research paper on their chosen topic.
The Reading Skills courses reinforce reading proficiency and teach the strategies needed for university-level academic success. Students explore real-world issues, discuss academic topics and study thematic materials. Through pair work, small group work, and whole class activities, students acquire the ability to critically engage with and react to scholarly journal articles.
Please note that the course content and the courses the successful candidates will be teaching may change from April 2028, when the curriculum will be revised.
