JOB SUMMARY: The Operating Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and monitoring of campus boilers, steam distribution systems, chillers, chilled water distribution systems, Building Management Systems (BMS), and all related auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, pumps, and HVAC components. This position ensures proper functioning of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems across campus facilities.
Employment Status: Full-Time (1.0 FTE), Benefits-Eligible, Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Pay Range: $25.00-$30.00 per hour
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate and oversee the operation of steam boilers and the steam distribution system in accordance with applicable codes and regulations.
- Operate and maintain campus chillers and chilled water distribution systems.
- Maintain and troubleshoot HVAC systems in all campus buildings.
- Inspect buildings and facilities to determine mechanical repair and maintenance needs.
- Assist the Chief Engineer in coordinating Heating Plant operations with other maintenance and repair personnel.
- Assist in scheduling and coordinating planned outages with campus stakeholders and mechanical contractors.
- Order, track, and maintain HVAC supply inventory; monitor Heating Plant expenditures.
- Maintain accurate records of labor, materials, time, and inventory.
- Review mechanical system plans for new construction during the design phase to ensure uniformity of equipment and standardization of campus systems.
- Prepare and submit work progress reports as required.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment compliant with OSHA safety standards.
- Remain current with evolving equipment, technology, job responsibilities, and procedures.
- Provide professional and service-oriented customer service to all customers and campus constituents.
- This position has been designated as weather- or emergency-essential. In the event of a closure of the College, it is vital to report to work only if contacted by the supervisor. You will receive regular pay for the hours normally scheduled to work that day plus your overtime rate at 1 times your regular rate for the actual hours worked during the closing.
- Other duties as assigned.
Prerequisites
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minnesota Operating Engineer First Class C License
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in HVAC and boiler operations
- Ability to work rotating weekends and respond to emergency situations, as needed
- Collaborate effectively with Facilities maintenance department
- High School diploma or equivalent
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Exposure to outside weather conditions year-round.
- Interaction with potentially hazardous chemicals and equipment
- Work at heights, including ladders, scaffolding, and roofs.
- Frequent moderate to heavy physical effort, including lifting up to 75 lbs.
