Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga - Lecturer in Architecture, on a permanent, full-time basis, reporting to the Tumuaki - Head of School, Te Kura Waihanga - School of Architecture. The position is located at the University’s Te Aro campus. The Bachelor of Architectural Studies and the Master of Architecture (Professional) are premier accredited programmes in Aotearoa, and Te Wāhanga Waihanga-Hoahoa - Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025.
Architecture at the Wellington School is founded on a combination of the creative arts and building science. It explores new spaces of architectural production through a collaborative approach to design, drawing on the other disciplines in the School: interiors, landscape architecture, building science, construction and planning. Students develop their expertise by means of core courses, many of which they share with the cognate majors such that their work is socially and environmentally informed and driven by emerging issues in practice. The programme’s emphasis on building performance ensures that our graduate’s work is grounded in the realities of climate change and resilience.
Key responsibilities:
- Academically rigorous teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across a variety of formats and topics (from digital technology to professional conduct) to the highest standards.
- Continue or develop ongoing research activity that informs teaching and contributes to industry needs.
- Active engagement with iwi, hapu, industry, government, professions, and diverse communities.
- Contribution to the collegial development of the programme, School, and Faculty in service roles.
Ō pūmanawa - About you
Applicants must have a disciplinary background in architecture, ideally with the ability to teach and research across other disciplines (landscape architecture, interior architecture, urban planning) in the School. A demonstrable expertise in teaching and strong research abilities are also necessary.
Key requirements:
- A completed PhD or Professional Master’s degree in a relevant field, or other relevant qualifications commensurate with the role.
- Evidence of successful teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level and good understanding of the expectations in relation to professional competencies.
- Evidence of developing skill with a range of pedagogies and technologies.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.
