Facility and Laboratory Operations
The PAAR Laboratory Research Operations Lead Technician at the PAAR Facility, located on the CFAES Wooster Campus, plays a critical role in supporting high-containment laboratory and animal research operations within BSL3 and BSL3AG environments. This position is responsible for the comprehensive setup of research rooms and laboratories, ensuring that all equipment and spaces are properly sanitized and prepared for experimental use. The lead technician operates and validates a variety of sterilization systems, including autoclaves, chlorine dioxide sterilizers, effluent decontamination systems, and tissue digesters, and manages the biological indicator program to ensure compliance with federal biosafety standards. The role includes troubleshooting and coordinating repairs for laboratory equipment, working closely with vendors and facility staff to maintain operational integrity.
Research and Experimental Support
In addition to facility support, the lead technician provides hands-on assistance with research and experimental procedures, including animal handling, restraint, husbandry, and data collection. They collaborate with principal investigators and research teams to design and execute standard operating procedures (SOPs), interpret sterility testing data, and adjust techniques to maintain experimental integrity. As the primary contact for animal care needs, the specialist liaises with the attending veterinarian to ensure the welfare of research animals and compliance with regulatory standards.
Compliance and Biosafety
The position also encompasses a significant compliance and biosafety component. The lead technician ensures strict adherence to the Select Agent Program and other regulatory guidelines by maintaining critical records related to training, SOPs, incident reports, and equipment validation. They assist with onboarding and training of BSL3 users, escort visitors, and verify protocol compliance. The development, refinement, and maintenance of SOPs for biosafety, biosecurity, and animal husbandry are ongoing responsibilities, requiring collaboration with the PAAR team and principal investigators to tailor procedures to specific laboratory needs. Incident reporting and revision logs are maintained meticulously for audit readiness.
Administrative and Logistical Duties
Administrative and logistical duties are integral to the role, including inventory management, supply ordering, and vendor coordination. The specialist supports database management, maintains facility readiness, and provides emergency and on-call services as needed. Their contributions ensure the seamless operation of the PAAR Facility, uphold the highest standards of biosafety and research integrity, and support the advancement of infectious disease research in a high-containment setting.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED. Associate or Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred.
- 4 years of relevant experience required (2 years with Associate's degree)
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. required
Please note that this position works directly with infectious diseases in animals and ownership of domestic livestock (poultry, cattle, swine) is strictly prohibited. Position also works with infectious diseases that may be zoonotic and individuals who are immunocompromised are strictly prohibited.
