Part Time Faculty - English Composition

The Highline College English department is actively looking for part-time English faculty to teach primarily in-person and hybrid courses on our main campus starting the 2025-2026 academic year. The successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to use non-discriminatory approach to teaching and learning for all students, including designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline(s) or program(s).

Candidates should be able and excited to teach courses within the English Department (teaching assignments may include evening/weekend, online, hybrid, and off-campus sections) and develop curriculum in consultation with the English department and Cultural Learning Communities.

Salary is based on initial placement, work experience, and the number of assigned credits.   • Faculty leadership position with Umoja and Highline Promise Partnership - specifically serving Black and Brown students, preferably in-person
  • Teach courses in the English Department (teaching assignment may include evening/weekend, online, hybrid, and off-campus sections);
  • Demonstrate student centered teaching practices;
  • Incorporate an equal opportunity approach to teaching and learning;
  • Provide on-campus and/or online instruction in English designed to promote effective learning;
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment for students using various teaching methods to support and enhance student success;
  • Develop, assess, and analyze student achievement of course learning outcomes with goal of enhancing and improving student learning;
  • Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes and fully participate in the college's program improvement/program review process;
  • Remain current in discipline(s)/program(s), including participating in the design, assessment, review and revision of courses, where appropriate, in response to developments in the field;
  • Complete other related duties and special projects as assigned.

At Highline, successful faculty applicants demonstrate the ability to:

  • Show commitment to student learning. This includes planning, organizing, and creating an interactive, cooperative, and mutually respectful learning environment, incorporating research-based practices to teaching and assessment.
  • Challenge learners intellectually. This includes encouraging students to ask questions, confront limits, recognize complexities, think critically, and challenge assumptions.
  • Practice student centered instruction. This includes designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment that are relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline.
  • Communicate effectively. This includes conveying information and expectations clearly, listening carefully, encouraging students to communicate, and acting with respect, enthusiasm, and empathy toward students.
  • Demonstrate personal and professional integrity. This includes, but is not limited to, being professional, honest, and ethical in the selection and delivery of course content.
  • Assessment. Ability to assess student-learning outcomes and use assessment data to modify instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree (or higher) in English or closely-related field from an institution with regional accreditation or its international equivalent. (Pending degrees must be verified by a letter from the granting institution.); OR
  • Master's in African American Literature, Composition and/or Rhetoric, or TESOL; AND
  • Professional and lived experience and expertise in working with or teaching Black / African American communities; AND
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to equal opportunity in working with students and colleagues from all backgrounds and identities.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Training in and/or experience teaching pre-college writing courses, composition and rhetoric, or technical writing;
  • Experience teaching at a two-year college;
  • Experience teaching composition to Black and Brown students;
  • Graduate work/teaching in Cultural and/or Ethnic Studies;
  • Successful completion of Umoja Summer Institute for Faculty;
  • Experience working with multilingual learners.
