Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) is currently accepting applications to establish a part-time assignment in this discipline. TRIO Math-Science Upward Bound (MSUB) is a federal grant funded program designed to assist 10th-12th grade first-generation and/or low-income students pursue a higher education. Support services are intended to assist eligible students to achieve academic success by developing academic skills necessary to succeed in college.
The Part-Time Counselor will assist the Coordinator/Counselor in the overall operations of the MPC MSUB Program activities in the Monterey Peninsula School District. The Part-Time Counselor will also assist in recruiting participants, providing workshops, academic advising for project participants, and assistance in completing the college admissions process.
Assignments include: Day, evening and weekend hours at the Monterey campus, Marina EducationCenter, and other sites in the community.
Example of Duties
- Provides academic, career, and personal counseling to high school students participating in the Math-Science Upward Bound Program.
- Coordinate, develop, and implement Summer Academy at UC Santa Cruz, including residential and academic components. (Due to COVID-19, this duty will not occur for summer 2021)
- Work collaboratively with targeted secondary schools and other educational institutions, to develop and maintain working relationships to support student success.
- Plans and implements college orientation experiences such as field trips, mentor and study skills workshops, math/science regional summer applications, and career and college search activities.
- Assists the Math-Science Upward Bound Coordinator/Counselor in recruiting and selecting eligible students.
- Assists students to qualify and apply to college through academic advising, SAT and ACT preparation, and assisting with college applications and financial aid applications.
- Teaches College Orientation and Career Planning classes in the Math-Science Upward Bound summer program.
- Maintains appropriate records of activities and student participation.
- Refers students to other appropriate services for assistance, support, or advice beyond the responsibility of the counselor.
- Assists students develop appropriate educational plans.
- Reviews each high school student's schedule of classes and transcripts to assure that the student is pursuing a planned educational program.
- Provides students with institutional information about financial aid and college application policies and procedures.
- Monitors the Math-Science Upward Bound attendance policy.
- Coordinates information and services with the other college counselors at MPC and at high schools and colleges/universities.
- Assists the Coordinator/Counselor in follow-up research on former Math-Science Upward Bound students attending post-secondary schools.
- Assists the Coordinator/Counselor with data collection and submission of reports including the Annual Performance Report.
- Supervises/coordinates and evaluates district student help and work study students as such positions are assigned and submits accurate records, time cards, and other required documents promptly.
- Conducts structured field trips for Math-Science Upward Bound students to transfer institutions as identified by the Math-Science Upward Bound Coordinator/Counselor.
- Attends department meetings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Math-Science Upward Bound Coordinator/Counselor.
- Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR
- Bachelor's in one of the above AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) valid in California, OR
- The equivalent. (Equivalency Forms must be submitted for consideration)
