Partner for a National Higher Education Practice

Steptoe & Johnson PLLC seeks an entrepreneurial partner-level attorney to join and help expand its growing national higher education practice. Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, a nationally-recognized provider of legal services to institutions of higher education and their affiliates, has approximately 380 lawyers with offices in seven states. It has represented institutions of higher education or their affiliates in 29 states, and the firm is further expanding its national higher education presence.

The firm seeks an experienced lawyer who understands the complex nature of higher education institutions and who aspires to serve as a long-term strategic advisor by helping institutions achieve their unique missions. The partner in this role will contribute to a practice model that prioritizes institutional strategy over isolated matters, combines preventive and advisory work with traditional representation, and integrates multiple legal disciplines to deliver comprehensive solutions. This position is well-suited for a lawyer who values collaboration with peers across the U.S., is comfortable working across governance, compliance, employment, investigations, litigation, and related areas, and is motivated to help expand a national platform focused on delivering legal services of unsurpassed value to higher education clients.

Candidates should have at least seven years of sophisticated higher education legal experience, a demonstrated record of client trust and business development acumen, and an established, portable book of business. The ideal candidate is a recognized strategic advisor who understands the operational realities of colleges and universities, an established developer of long-term institutional relationships, and is eager to grow within a firm actively investing in the national expansion of its higher education platform.
