The Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Utah is seeking an academic surgeon with specialized training in burn care and pediatric surgical critical care to join our expanding pediatric surgery program. This individual will play a foundational leadership role in building, organizing, and formalizing a new Pediatric Burn Service at Primary Children's Hospital - Lehi Campus, while also contributing to pediatric surgical critical care services and the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program across the Primary Children's Hospital system.
This is an exceptional opportunity to help establish a new regional center of excellence in pediatric burn care within a nationally recognized pediatric healthcare system and in collaboration with an established and nationally recognized Burn Unit at the University of Utah. Position Overview
The Pediatric Burn Surgeon / Pediatric Surgical Critical Care Intensivist will:
- Lead the development, organization, and operationalization of a comprehensive Pediatric Burn Service at Primary Children's Hospital - Lehi Campus
- Collaborate closely with nursing, emergency medical services, trauma, PICU leadership, anesthesia, rehabilitation, therapy services, and the University of Utah Burn Center to establish best practices and evidence-based pediatric burn care pathways
- Provide complete burn management including resuscitation, acute burn surgery, operative reconstruction, scar management, and outpatient care
- Provide pediatric surgical critical care services and consultation across the Primary Children's Hospital system both in Salt Lake City and Lehi
- Support the Pediatric ECMO Program, contributing to cannulation planning, peri-ECMO surgical management, and multidisciplinary ECMO care
- Participate in academic and scholarly work in burn care, trauma, pediatric critical care, ECMO, education, or outcomes research
Qualifications
- Board certified in General Surgery
- Board certified/eligible in Surgical Critical Care (pediatric critical care experience preferred)
- Fellowship training in Burn Surgery (ABA-recognized fellowship preferred)
- Eligible for appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level
- Demonstrated excellence in clinical care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and communication
- Interest or experience in ECMO and high-acuity pediatric critical care environments
- Commitment to academic productivity, quality improvement, and program development
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
Pediatric Surgery fellowship and board certification are not required but will be considered.
