Programme Structure
Courses include:
- Graduate courses at the School of Life Sciences comprise of general courses, specialized courses, and interdisciplinary courses, within which there are compulsory and elective courses students can take to earn credit towards their degree.
- Ph.D. Program in Biology students are supported by a world-class academic community with courses from distinguished experts, including Yigong Shi, Tian Xu, Hongtao Yu, and Duanqing Pei, as well as a diverse range of courses from our world-leading expert faculty members.
- Some of the most popular courses include ‘Fundamental Biological Processes and Concepts’ delivered jointly by Hongtao Yu and over 20 other PIs, ‘Method and Logic in Life Sciences’ from Yigong Shi, and ‘Basic Concepts of Genetic Analysis’ from Tian Xu, to name a few.

Other requirements
- A photocopy of your passport: Photocopy of valid passport bio data page.
- Personal statement: More than 1,500 words in English are required for Ph.D. applicants. The content should include (but not be limited to) why you want to study at Westlake, why you want to do research (expected content of the research proposal), personal achievements, experiences worth mentioning in your opinion, and your attitude towards life and research.
- All diploma and degree certificates: The original or a notarized copy of your certificates (or proof of impending graduation for applicants in their final year of study).
- All transcripts: The original or a notarized copy of your transcripts showing all your studies for your bachelor’s and master's (if applicable) degrees. If the transcripts are not in English or Chinese, you must also attach a notarized translation in English or Chinese.

Tuition Fees
International tuition fee: 8,348 AUD / year (≈ 40,000 CNY / year)
Domestic tuition fee: 2,087 AUD / year (≈ 10,000 CNY / year)
Living costs
Hangzhou, China: 831-1,313 AUD / month
The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
Funding
Westlake University is committed to making Ph.D. education valuable and affordable. We provide financial support for our doctoral students to cover their tuition, on-campus room and board rates, insurance premiums, and other living costs. All admitted Ph.D. students in our programs receive full tuition grants and a monthly living stipend to cover daily living expenses. In addition, Westlake houses world-class laboratories and multiple shared facilities that support a diverse array of cutting-edge research. Our facilities are well-funded and well-equipped, giving our Ph.D. students sufficient resources to succeed in their research, academics, and professional endeavors.
Westlake University does not currently provide Chinese Government Scholarships from the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). Westlake University may offer them in the future. At present all international student scholarships are funded by Westlake University, generous philanthropic donations, and from the Hangzhou municipal government.
