Overview
Westlake University's Chemistry Ph.D. programme is interdisciplinary, innovative, diverse, and collaborative.
Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology
- Research areas include organic catalysis, supramolecular organic functional assembly, chiral synthesis, metal-organic methodology and chemical biology.
- Our feature is to give full play to the advantages of basic disciplines of organic chemistry while establishing and developing new theories and methods, studying reaction mechanisms, and guiding the discovery of new reactions, the invention of efficient catalysts, and the innovation of synthesis strategies of complex natural product molecules and biological macromolecules.
- It focuses on the intersection with life and medical science, materials and manufacturing science, and concentrates on solving basic scientific problems in the design and development of organic functional molecules.
Materials & Nanoscience
- The research area focuses on the chemical synthesis, physicochemical properties of materials and the constitutive relationship between electrons, atoms, molecules and microstructure of materials.
- The discipline focuses on the cross, penetration and fusion between materials science and physics, chemistry, biology, computer and other disciplines. Our faculty conduct innovative research in the fields of efficient energy conversion and storage materials, new biological environmental protection materials, and computer-aided material design.
Physical Chemistry and Computational Chemistry
- Research areas include homogeneous/heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry, theoretical and computational chemistry, photochemistry, surface interface chemistry, energy chemistry, structure and spectroscopy, chemical reaction kinetics, etc.
- It is characterized by the combination of basic theory and calculation method, precise measurement principle and analysis method, and application innovation technology, and plays the role of physical chemistry as the basis of theory and technology method of chemistry and related disciplines.

- Personal statement: More than 1,500 words in English are required for Ph.D. applicants. The content should include (but not be limited to) why you want to study at Westlake, why you want to do research (expected content of the research proposal), personal achievements, experiences worth mentioning in your opinion, and your attitude towards life and research.
- All diploma and degree certificates: The original or a notarized copy of your certificates (or proof of impending graduation for applicants in their final year of study).
- All transcripts: The original or a notarized copy of your transcripts showing all your studies for your bachelor’s and master's (if applicable) degrees. If the transcripts are not in English or Chinese, you must also attach a notarized translation in English or Chinese.

Westlake University is committed to making Ph.D. education valuable and affordable. We provide financial support for our doctoral students to cover their tuition, on-campus room and board rates, insurance premiums, and other living costs. All admitted Ph.D. students in our programs receive full tuition grants and a monthly living stipend to cover daily living expenses. In addition, Westlake houses world-class laboratories and multiple shared facilities that support a diverse array of cutting-edge research. Our facilities are well-funded and well-equipped, giving our Ph.D. students sufficient resources to succeed in their research, academics, and professional endeavors.
Westlake University does not currently provide Chinese Government Scholarships from the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC). Westlake University may offer them in the future. At present all international student scholarships are funded by Westlake University, generous philanthropic donations, and from the Hangzhou municipal government.
