The PhD in Creative Writing programme at Victoria University of Wellington is designed for those who wish to write creatively and think in focussed and original ways about the critical contexts of their writing.

Programme Structure
Courses include
- Your thesis will consist of a book-length creative project or the text of full-length works for stage or screen, and a substantial piece of critical research.
- There are regular PhD group workshops, and the programme also requires an ability to work independently.
- You meet at least once a month with your supervisor, and the supervisor-student relationship is crucial to the progress of your work for the PhD.
- PhD candidates must be registered for a minimum of 36 months full time, or equivalent, before they submit a thesis for examination. Under normal circumstances a PhD would be expected to take three years of full-time work.

The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
- PTE Academic: 58. PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.
- IELTS: 6.5. The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).
Other requirements
General requirements: Research degree such as Honours or Master's by thesis from a New Zealand university with an average grade of B+ or higher, an approved international equivalent, or other approved evidence of adequate training and ability.
