Overview
The doctoral program in Management at emlyon business school aims to train students to become independent researchers who produce world-class research.
Students in the PhD program work closely with emlyon's internationally renowned faculty who conduct cutting-edge research and publish in the top academic journals in the fields of organization theory, strategy and entrepreneurship.
The aim of emlyon's PhD program
The ambition of the PhD Program is to develop scholars whose research has implications beyond the academy, informing public policy, managerial practice, and societal debate.
This aligns with the school's aim to develop our students into “early Makers” – researchers who contribute knowledge and practices that help to address important real-world problems. Our mission as a school is to do more than just train scholars rather we aim to transform.

Academic requirements
- GRE® — Required. The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.
- GMAT — Required. The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA. GMAT contains 4 sections - Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. The score has a range from 200 - 800.

General requirements
- Although almost all of our students have an MA or MSc, there are also some that have only an undergraduate degree. Following the first two years of the program (Phase 1 of the PhD) and provided you have passed all classes and have an average of 13/20 or above you will receive an emlyon Master of Philosophy in Management (MPhil).
- It is not necessary for applicants to have a background in management/business administration prior to entering the program. A background in a related discipline such as sociology, psychology, philosophy, political science, economics, engineering or statistics can provide students with the foundation needed.
- Admission depends on the quality of the student's application, their prior academic performance, research interest/experience, motivation to work as research faculty in higher education in the future as well as other factors such as GMAT or GRE scores, TOEFL or TOEIC scores and submitted reference letters.

Academic fees are waived for all admitted students to the Ph.D. programme.
