Job Summary

Eager to bridge photonics and terahertz technology? Develop terahertz phototransistors in a unique double PhD degree: 2 years at TU/e (NL) + 2 years at TU Darmstadt (DE) starting from November 2025. This project aims to unlock the potential of terahertz waves for applications in security, medical imaging, and wireless communication by pioneering novel phototransistor technology to generate and amplify terahertz radiation.

Responsibilities

You will design and optimize semiconductor heterostructures for terahertz phototransistors, grow semiconductor layers, and fabricate devices using state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities. You will characterize devices using dual continuous-wave lasers or ultrafast pulsed lasers, measure THz emission via on-chip antennas, and work with labs at both TU/e and TU Darmstadt. Additionally, validate results and publish breakthroughs in top journals and conferences.

Qualifications and Requirements

A master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics (not older than four years). A research-oriented attitude, ability to work in an interdisciplinary team, interest in collaborating with industrial partners, motivation to develop teaching skills, and fluency in English (C1 level). Knowledge or experience in semiconductors, lasers and fiber optics, terahertz, or clean room experience is required.

What the Employer Offers

A 4-year dual PhD degree with TU/e and TU Darmstadt, mentorship from experts, training in semiconductor growth, nanofabrication, and advanced photonics. Full-time employment for four years (2 years at TU/e + 2 years at TU Darmstadt) with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary between €3,059 and €3,881 per month, benefits including pension scheme, paid parental leave, a year-end bonus of 8.3%, annual vacation pay of 8%, high-quality training programs, excellent technical infrastructure, commuting allowance, and support for international candidates.
