Summary: There is an open call for one (1) Research Scholarship ("Bolsa de Investigação") at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of project Neurovision with Nr/Ref. 2024.17187.PEX. This project is funded by FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia

Work Objectives:
- Design and implement compression algorithms for event-based data, including lossy and learning-based approaches.
- Develop models for aggregating and representing neuromorphic event data.
- Integrate the proposed codec into selected use cases, such as high-frame-rate video reconstruction and machine vision tasks.
- Evaluate compression performance through rate–distortion analysis, objective quality metrics, and task-oriented benchmarks.
- Disseminate research results through scientific publications, including conference papers, and contribute to international standardization activities within JPEG XE.
Place of work: The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at Instituto Superior Técnico, Avenida Rovisco Pais 1, under the supervision of Prof./Dr. João Miguel Duarte Ascenso
Duration: 12 months, with the possibility of renewal. This type of scholarship has a maximum duration of 2 years. Start date: november 2026 or soon thereafter

Benefits
Monthly salary: 1359,64€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Eligibility criteria
- Hold a M.Sc. degree completed in electrical, telecommunications and/or computer engineering;
- Be enrolled on a PhD degree programme in Computer science or Electrical and Computer Engineering;
- Strong programming skills in languages such as Python or C/C++
- Knowledge at least one of the following areas: image and video compression, event-based or neuromorphic vision, signal processing, or machine learning and deep learning for visual data.
- A strong motivation to conduct research and disseminate scientific results.
- Good written and spoken English communication skills.
