Ageing Better CoLAB (ABC CoLAB – Algarve Biomedical Center Collaborative Laboratory – Integrated Solutions for Ageing and Rejuvenation) is an innovative triple-helix collaborative laboratory in the field of health, focused on longevity and active ageing, with the mission of transferring knowledge and technology to society and target markets.
This call is open for the recruitment of one (1) PhD Researcher (M/F) in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields, within the scope of the AgeTech – Research on Compounds for Anti-Ageing Cosmetic Products project, under operation COMPETE2030-FEDER-01193900, corresponding to the application submitted under Call MPr-2023-7, co-funded by the European Union.

Mission: Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will participate in experimental procedures, research activities, and other tasks contributing to the successful implementation of current and future projects, products and services.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Participate in the analysis and selection of marine-derived bioactive compounds, particularly those with the potential to reduce DNA damage and promote cellular regeneration, revitalisation and/or rejuvenation, for the development of novel cosmetic formulations;
- Perform experimental procedures and laboratory techniques in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry and cell culture;
- Participate in data collection, recording, processing and statistical analysis;
- Contribute to the preparation of project reports and scientific publications;
- Support the research and innovation activities developed within the ABC CoLAB research agenda;
- Contribute to the preparation of national and international competitive funding applications;
- Support the implementation of technical procedures required for the operationalisation of products and services;
- Participate in the dissemination, communication and knowledge transfer activities of ABC CoLAB;
- Work within a multidisciplinary team, maintaining close collaboration with the other professionals involved and contributing to the quality of the project's monitoring and evaluation processes.
REQUIRED PROFILE
PhD (mandatory) in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field.
Experience in
- Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology and Microbiology techniques;
- Cell culture;
- Microscopy;
- Statistical data analysis;
- Bioinformatics analysis and programming languages, including R;
- Working independently while maintaining strong collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and external partners.

WORK LOCATION

O ABC CoLAB (Laboratório Colaborativo do Algarve Biomedical Center - Soluções Integradas para o Envelhecimento e Rejuvenescimento), constitui-se como um modelo de hélice tripla inovador na área da saúde focando em longevidade e envelhecimento ativo, com o propósito de transferir conhecimento e tecnologia para a sociedade e mercados-alvo.
Este concurso destina-se à contratação de um (1) Doutorado (M/F) em Biologia, Biologia Molecular, Bioquímica, Ciências Biológicas, Ciências Biomédicas, ou áreas relacionadas, no âmbito do projeto AgeTech - Investigação de Compostos para Produtos Cosméticos de Antienvelhecimento ao abrigo da operação COMPETE2030-FEDER-01193900 referente à candidatura submetida ao Aviso MPr-2023-7 e cofinanciado pela União Europeia.

Missão: Sob a coordenação da Investigadora Responsável, e em estreita colaboração com uma equipa multidisciplinar, o/a candidato/a selecionado/a deverá participar em procedimentos experimentais, tarefas de investigação ou tarefas associadas ao bom desenvolvimento de projetos, produtos e/ou serviços em curso e futuros.
PRINCIPAIS RESPONSABILIDADES E FUNÇÕES
- Participar na análise e seleção de compostos biológicos de origem marinha com bioatividade, nomeadamente de redução do dano no ADN, regeneração, revitalização e/ou rejuvenescimento celular, para o desenvolvimento de novas formulações cosméticas;
- Executar procedimentos experimentais e técnicas laboratoriais, na área da biologia molecular, bioquímica e cultura celular;
- Participar na recolha, registo, tratamento dos dados e análise estatística;
- Colaborar na preparação de relatórios do projeto e de artigos científicos;
- Apoiar as atividades a desenvolver na agenda de investigação e inovação do ABC CoLAB;
- Participar na elaboração de candidaturas, nacionais e internacionais a financiamento competitivo;
- Apoiar na execução de procedimentos técnicos para operacionalização de produtos e serviços;
- Participar na disseminação, comunicação e transferência de conhecimento do ABC CoLAB;
- Integração numa equipa multidisciplinar, requerendo articulação contínua com os restantes profissionais envolvidos, contribuindo para a qualidade dos processos de monitorização e avaliação do projeto.
PERFIL REQUERIDO:
Doutoramento (OBRIGATÓRIO) em Biologia, Biologia Molecular, Bioquímica, Ciências Biológicas, Ciências Biomédicas ou áreas relacionadas.
Com Experiência em:
- Técnicas de Biologia Molecular, Biologia Celular, Bioquímica, Imunologia e Microbiologia;
- Cultura celular;
- Microscopia;
- Análise estatística;
- Análise bioinformática e linguagens de programação, incluindo R;
- Trabalhar de forma autónoma, mantendo uma forte articulação com equipas multidisciplinares e parceiros externos.

Selection process
SELECTION COMMITTEE
The Selection Committee is composed of the following members:

SELECTION METHODS AND EVALUATION CRITERIA
Admission to the Selection Process: all applicants who meet the eligibility requirements set out in this Call for Applications will be admitted to the selection process.
Eligible applications will be assessed on a 0–20 point scale, where 0 is the minimum score and 20 is the maximum score.
Following the Curriculum Assessment, the four (4) highest-ranked candidates will be invited to attend a Selection Interview.
If two or more candidates are tied for the last position eligible for the Selection Interview, all candidates with the same score will also be invited to the interview stage.
Evaluation Method
Curriculum Assessment (CA)
The Curriculum Assessment accounts for 50% of the final classification and is intended to evaluate the candidates' academic, professional and technical background, taking into consideration the relevance of their qualifications, competencies and professional experience to the duties of the position.
The Curriculum Assessment score will be calculated based on the following criteria:
- AQ – Academic Qualifications (10%)
- RPE – Relevant Professional Experience (50%)
- ML – Motivation Letter (20%)
- AC – Additional Competencies relevant to the position (20%)
The Curriculum Assessment score will be calculated using the following formula:
CA = (0.10 × AQ) + (0.50 × RPE) + (0.20 × ML) + (0.20 × AC)
Selection Interview (SI)
The Selection Interview (SI) accounts for 50% of the final classification and aims to assess the candidates' competencies in the following areas:
- Suitability of the candidate's profile for the duties to be performed;
- Motivation to perform the role;
- Communication and verbal expression skills;
- Organisational and planning skills;
- Collaboration and teamwork skills;
- Analytical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Final Classification (FC)
The Final Classification will be expressed on a 0–20 point scale, where:
- CA – Curriculum Assessment
- SI – Selection Interview
The Final Classification will be calculated using the following formula:
FC = (0.50 × CA) + (0.50 × SI)
In the event of a tie in the final classification, candidates will be ranked according to the score obtained in the Selection Interview.
If the tie persists, the Selection Committee shall make a reasoned decision based on an overall assessment of the candidates' profiles and their suitability for the duties to be performed.
COMMUNICATION OF RESULTS
The four (4) candidates with the highest scores in the Curriculum Assessment will be contacted by email or telephone to schedule the Selection Interview.
Following completion of the Selection Interviews, all candidates who submitted an application will be notified by email of the outcome of the recruitment process. The final ranking list will also be made available on the official Ageing Better CoLAB website (www.ageingbettercolab.org).
Candidates shall have 10 working days from the date of notification of the results to submit any comments they may wish to make under the prior hearing of interested parties, in accordance with the Portuguese Code of Administrative Procedure.
The final decision shall be taken within a maximum period of 60 working days following the conclusion of the prior hearing procedure.
