Project Description

Project Title: Development of new silicon-based reagents for organic synthesis
Supervisor: Assistant Professor Matteo Costantini

This PhD position focuses on developing novel silicon-based reagents for the activation of inert organic substrates through single-electron logic. Using electro- or photochemical methods, the project aims to uncover new reactivity manifolds and expand modern synthetic methodologies. Applications include medicinal chemistry, materials science, and catalysis, while addressing sustainability challenges like upcycling chemical pollutants and valorizing unexploited feedstock.

Main tasks include:

  1. Synthesis and characterization of new silicon-based reagents
  2. Study the reactivity of derived active species, potentially in collaboration with computational chemists
  3. Apply the developed methods in heterogeneous systems for practical applications

Candidate Profile:

  • Proactive, ambitious, and problem-solving mindset
  • Strong background in synthetic organic chemistry
  • Basic knowledge of standard analytical methods (NMR, gas/liquid chromatography)
  • Hands-on experience with electrochemical and photochemical methods is desirable but not mandatory
  • Good English proficiency, oral and written

Qualification Requirements

General Requirements:

  • Completed a second-cycle degree (Master’s) or equivalent, with at least 240 higher education credits (60 at second-cycle level)

Specific Requirements:

  • Successfully completed a Master’s thesis (≥30 credits) in a subject relevant to organic chemistry

Selection Criteria:

  • Documented knowledge in a relevant research field
  • Analytical and creative thinking
  • Initiative and independence
  • Ability to collaborate
  • Written and oral proficiency in English

Admission is according to the Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University.

About the Employment

  • Fixed-term employment as a doctoral student under Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100)
  • Full-time doctoral education is normally for four years; employment may include up to 20% teaching, research, or administrative duties
  • Employment renewed up to two years at a time
  • Stockholm University promotes a discrimination-free workplace and equal opportunities
