Project Description

This PhD project aims to identify the macro- to micro-scale structures responsible for the initial stages of hydration in dry, impermeable rocks, and to determine the resulting variations in rock rheology.

The project will use a field-based approach, combining detailed structural analyses with quantitative (micro-)analytical techniques. Fieldwork will be conducted in areas exposing deep portions of the continental crust in the Scandinavian Caledonides and the European Alps.

As the project focuses on high-grade metamorphic rocks, it will involve petrological methods and tools. The selected candidate will also work with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and electron microprobe analyses to trace micro-scale fluid pathways. In the later stages, there will be opportunities to engage with numerical modeling tools to synthesize results.

During this four-year PhD program, the candidate will receive training in fieldwork, analytical techniques, and numerical modeling, and will benefit from collaboration within an international research network.

Qualification Requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education, applicants must meet both general and specific entry requirements by the application deadline.

General entry requirements
You meet the general entry requirements if you have:

• Completed a second-cycle degree, or
• Completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits (ECTS), of which at least 60 must be at the second-cycle level, or
• Acquired equivalent knowledge in another way, in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements
According to the general syllabus for doctoral studies in Geology, applicants must normally have:

• At least 90 credits in geosciences
• At least 30 credits in mathematics, physics, chemistry and/or biology (depending on the chosen subfield)
• At least 60 credits at the advanced level, including 30 credits of independent work in geosciences

Applicants with equivalent qualifications or a background in related sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology) may also be considered.

Selection Criteria

Selection among eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from doctoral training. The following criteria will be used:

• Documented knowledge of structural geology and metamorphic petrology
• Written and oral proficiency in English
• Ability to work outdoors in rugged terrain for extended periods
• Analytical thinking and ability to collaborate

Assessment will consider previous experience, academic performance, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant field or lab experience, interviews, and the motivation letter.
Experience with fieldwork in metamorphic rocks, electron microscopy, or numerical modeling will be an advantage.

Terms of Employment

• Type of employment: Temporary (Doctoral studentship)

Doctoral students may engage in teaching, research, or administrative duties up to 20% of full-time. Employment is initially for one year, and may be renewed for up to two years at a time.
