Understanding tyre–road surface contact is critical to achieving desired vehicle performance. Friction is a complex property, unique to each system, and challenging to measure and model. To explore the relationship between tyre operating conditions and friction behaviour, new characterisation and analysis techniques are required.

In partnership with Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd, this PhD research will combine fundamental engineering science with advanced experimentation to develop methods that inform and validate next-generation tyre friction models.

Key objectives include:

  • Developing innovative experimental methodologies to study tyre–road contact physics.
  • Providing new insights to better predict tyre–road friction.

Based within both the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical & Manufacturing Engineering and the School of Automotive, Aerospace, Chemical & Materials Engineering, this fully funded studentship suits candidates from mechanical, automotive, aerospace, materials, or physical science backgrounds.

The project will be primarily experimental and modelling-based, with some design work. It will use advanced surface measurement and analysis techniques to characterise contact interactions.

An interest in motorsport is not required; we seek motivated individuals eager to learn and reach their full potential. The researcher will benefit from world-class training at Loughborough University, gaining high-level technical skills in experimental and modelling methods for tribological and dynamical systems. A personal development fund will support participation in international conferences, training, and collaboration with the industrial partner.

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds. For further information, please contact N.J.Morris@lboro.ac.uk or ws.phdadmin@lboro.ac.uk.

Entry requirements:
Applicants must have, or expect to have, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) with a UK master's degree (with average programme mark of no less than 65%) or international equivalent.

English language requirements:
Applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements.

Funding information:
The studentship is for 3 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £20,780 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees.

How to apply:
All applications should be made via the ‘Apply’ button above. Under Campus, please select ‘Loughborough’ and select Programme ‘Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering’. Please quote the advertised reference number ‘FP-NM-2025’ in your application under the ‘Finance’ section. The following selection criteria will be used by academic schools to help them make a decision on your application.
Applications must include a personal statement, up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV), details of two referees (one from your highest degree qualification), certified certificates and transcripts for all completed degree programmes, and a reference to the project ‘FP-NM-2025’. Submission of a research proposal is not essential but may strengthen your application.

Incomplete applications received after the closing date may not be considered for interview. Early application is strongly encouraged as we reserve the right to interview and withdraw the advert ahead of the closing date.
