PhD Studentship: Experimental Aerodynamics and Environmental Flows
In this dynamic and collaborative project, we will conduct wind tunnel experiments to characterise the flow field and pollution dispersion for four European urban models: Barcelona, Sarajevo, Lausanne, and Barakaldo. These tests will be carried out in the National Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at the University of Bristol. The student will join a vibrant and multidisciplinary team within the Experimental Aerodynamics and Air Quality Group, benefiting from a wide range of training opportunities and technical expertise available within the group.
This research forms part of the Horizon Europe HARMONIE project, offering the successful candidate the opportunity to engage with a network of over 19 academic and industry partners from across Europe. The PhD student will also have the opportunity to present his/her results in international conferences.
The selected student will employ a range of advanced experimental techniques, such as Constant Temperature Anemometry (CTA), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), unsteady pressure measurements, and Flame Ionization Detection (FID), to investigate flow behaviour and pollutant concentrations in complex urban environments. The student will be part of a large team of experimental aerodynamics and air quality group and will benefit from various trainings available within the group.
Applicants must hold/achieve a minimum of a merit at master’s degree level (or international equivalent) in a science, mathematics or engineering discipline. Applicants without a master's qualification may be considered on an exceptional basis, provided they hold a first-class undergraduate degree. If English is not your first language, you need to meet Profile E. Further information about English language requirements and profile levels can be found at http://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/language-requirements/.
