Overview

Background

Decarbonising aviation remains a global challenge, driving the UK and the EU to introduce ambitious Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandates that target 22% renewable blending by 2040 and 70% by 2050. However, current SAF routes like HEFA and ATJ depend on costly, food-based feedstocks. This project addresses that limitation by exploring the microbial conversion of lignocellulosic C5/C6 sugars derived from agricultural residues into higher alcohols —an innovative, sustainable alternative aligned with the UK’s Jet Zero and circular bioeconomy goals.

Research Objectives

The project aims to identify high-performing microbial species capable of efficiently converting mixed C5/C6 sugars into higher alcohols with excellent yield and productivity. Robust yeast and bacterial strains will be studied alongside continuous, integrated fermentation–separation processes to enhance efficiency and reduce fuel costs and lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Research Activities
  • Strain screening: Identify and evaluate microbes for efficient C5/C6 sugar utilisation and tolerance.
  • Fermentation trials: Optimise batch, fed batch, and continuous operations at lab scale.
  • In Situ Product Recovery (ISPR) evaluation: Test ISPR methods to boost productivity and energy efficiency.
  • Bioprocess modelling: Employ simulation, techno-economic analysis (TEA), and life-cycle assessment (LCA) to assess cost and GHG performance.
Candidate’s Competencies and Skills
  • Background in biochemical or chemical engineering, biotechnology, or microbial processes.
  • Hands-on experience in fermentation, microbial cultivation, and analytical techniques (HPLC/GC).
  • Familiarity with bioprocess modelling and simulation tools (e.g., Aspen Plus, MATLAB, or Python), TEA, and LCA.
  • Strong data analysis, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to sustainability and research integrity.

A minimum 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a subject relevant to the proposed PhD project is our standard entry, however we place value on prior experience, enthusiasm for research, and the ability to think and work independently. Excellent Analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are also essential requirements. A Masters qualification may not be required if you have a minimum 2:1 degree or can evidence alternative experience in a work or research-based project. If you have alternative qualifications or experience, please contact us to discuss flexibilities and request an exemption.

Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills. International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.
