PhD Studentship: Quantum Many-Body Physics with Ultracold Polar Molecules

Ultracold polar molecules are an exciting emerging platform for the exploration of quantum many-body physics thanks to their long-range dipolar interactions, excellent controllability and rich internal structure. This type of platform is opening up new avenues to study a wide-range of phenomena associated with quantum magnetism, quantum fluids, synthetic dimensions and exotic quantum phases.

This theoretical PhD project will explore some of these topics through experimental and theoretical collaborations with other UK groups within the EPSRC Programme Grant "Quantum Many-Body Physics with Ultracold Polar Molecules".

The PhD project may include both analytical and numerical calculations, and the successful candidate should have an Undergraduate or Masters degree in Physics (preferably with first class honours or equivalent). The candidate is expected to have a strong general background in theoretical physics, with an interest in topics such as quantum physics, ultracold physics and condensed matter physics.

The project will take place in the Theoretical Physics group at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham, under the supervision of Prof Hannah Price (https://hannahmprice.com/). For more information, please contact Prof. Hannah Price at: H.Price.2@bham.ac.uk

Funding Notes

This studentship will start in September 2026, and will last for 3.5 years, covering UK/home-student fees and stipend. Interviews for this position will take place on a date to be confirmed in February/March, and will coincide with interviews for other PhD positions supervised by other staff members in the Birmingham Theoretical Physics group. Unless applicants choose to specify otherwise, they will also automatically be considered for these other positions, for which funding is available on a competitive basis.

For specific enquiries about this studentship, please contact Prof. Hannah Price at: H.Price.2@bham.ac.uk. For information about other potential projects in Birmingham, please contact the other Theoretical Physics staff members (see View Website for more details)
