Background and Context

The Strategic Planning and Performance team coordinates strategic planning across the Institution and links this to performance tracking and monitoring, to enable the delivery of strategic priorities at multiple levels of the organisation.

  • Coordinates strategic planning processes and administration.
  • Supports workforce and capital investment planning.
  • Leads student number planning and scenario modelling.
  • Provides a business partnering role to Faculties and supports the process for faculty performance reviews.
  • Manages the fee-setting process.
  • Oversees KPI development and reporting.
  • Coordinates statutory returns.
  • Manages the Planning Officer role on behalf of the overall Service.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the Post

The Planning Officer provides essential operational support across the Strategic Planning and Performance Service, contributing to the smooth running of core activities and helping ensure the team functions efficiently and effectively. They carry out a range of administrative tasks, including organising meetings, managing procurement processes, and coordinating communications. They deploy strong organisational skills in order to support a range of strategic functions.

They take responsibility for maintaining data quality by performing data cleaning and validation tasks, helping ensure that planning and reporting outputs are accurate and reliable. The Planning Officer also handles first-line enquiries from internal and external stakeholders at a range of levels of seniority, providing clear and helpful responses or directing queries to the appropriate team members.

They support the distribution and tracking of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, ensuring timely and compliant responses in line with university procedures. The Planning Officer is expected to manage and prioritise their work independently and to be able to react to the needs of the service and external stakeholders. The Planning Officer will take decisions in relation to service delivery and prioritisation of requests, and make recommendations to more senior decision makers as necessary.

The Planning Officer helps gather and organise data for student number planning, performance monitoring, and scenario modelling. They contribute to the production of reports and briefing materials, ensuring that information is accurate, well-presented, and aligned with institutional priorities. The role also involves liaising with colleagues across faculties and professional services to support the coordination of planning activities and performance reviews.

In addition to their core duties, the Planning Officer contributes to the coordination of large meetings and events, including scheduling, logistics, and preparation of materials. They communicate effectively with colleagues across the Institution, helping to maintain strong working relationships and a responsive service. The role offers opportunities for development through continuing professional learning and collaboration with colleagues across planning, analytics, and reporting functions.
