Plant Maintenance Engineer

Job Description

The Plant Maintenance Engineer is responsible for overseeing and performing technical operations and maintenance for all ATCC campus buildings. This includes the upkeep and repair of roofs, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing systems. The position ensures that all building systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably to support the college’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and execute preventative and corrective maintenance for building systems and equipment.
  • Apply a proactive approach to minimize equipment failures, breakdowns, and service interruptions.
  • Respond to emergency situations as required, including outside of scheduled work hours, to maintain essential services.
  • Accurately document maintenance activities and incidents in daily status reports.

Position Highlights:

This is an essential service role critical to the safety and functionality of the campus environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate technical expertise, sound judgment, and a commitment to operational excellence. This position reports to the Physical Plant Manager. As stated, this is an essential service position and may be required to respond to emergency events outside of scheduled hours and record all incidents on a daily status report.

Salary Range:

$33.57 to $38.98 per hour / $70,094 to $81,390 annually

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid State of Minnesota Boiler’s License – Chief Class C OR obtain within 5 years making progression as hours are logged per state statute. (ATCC Boiler systems are dual fuel (natural gas/fuel oil) hot water boilers.)
  • Ability to oversee all HVAC and plumbing operations to ensure state and local codes and requirements are met.
  • Proficiency in procedures and practices of building HVAC systems, installation methods, operation procedures and BAS system control strategies and material and equipment utilized in the process.
  • Knowledge of the principles of state heating and ventilating codes, OSHA and computerized HVAC control systems.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the mechanical systems and the necessary safety precautions.
  • Valid State of MN Class D Driver’s License.
  • Proficient computer skills to communicate using Outlook, retrieve computer-generated assignments from facilities software, ability to operate building automation system software, and ability to create documents in Word, Excel, etc., proficient in use of smart phone and IPad technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of documented experience on leading a successful HVAC team.
  • Experience in use of building automation systems (such as Automation Logic) to monitor, perform basic functions, respond to alarms, and take corrective action.
  • Knowledge and skills of electrical systems/repair.
  • Knowledge and skills in plumbing systems.
  • Asbestos Worker Certification.
  • Experience in assisting trades in remodeling and new construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical manuals.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job including: walking, standing, stooping, squatting, lifting up to 50 lbs., reaching above the shoulder level, bending, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing/balancing.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with various types of equipment and tools on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work in conditions and physical surroundings which may include working both indoors and outdoors, areas which have noise/vibrations, dusty/poorly ventilated, work from ladders or platforms.
