Summary
Performs a variety of journey level activities to install, maintain, and repair plumbing, heating, and water systems.
Duties
- Installs, maintains, and repairs chilled water, steam, heat, and gas fixtures.
- Inspects, maintains, and repairs hot water and steam boilers and gas furnaces.
- Reads gas and safety control valves and meters.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and/or replaces faucets, major and minor water, gas and sewer lines.
- Cleans, repairs, and/or replaces manholes.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs thermostats, motors, and belts.
- Inspects boilers to ensure water levels and pressures are in accordance with standards, and performs minor electrical work on boilers including safety switches, pilot thermocouples, and/or gas regulators.
- Installs filter systems.
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment to trench water, gas, and sewer lines to construct and/or repair lines.
- Follows all required safety measures and uses protective gear as needed to prevent injury to self and others.
- Solders copper lines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Background
High School Diploma or GED preferred with 4 years of experience in plumbing, electrical, boiler making system maintenance and repair. Completion of a vocational/trade school course or program in plumbing, electrical, or closely related area may substitute for two years required experience. Requires a journey level plumbing license. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Job Knowledge
Knowledge of Uniform Plumbing Codes and Standard Plumbing Codes. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques to install, maintain, and repair of plumbing, boilers, furnaces, and associated water/gas/sewer lines. Knowledge of the safe and proper methods and techniques for inspection and repair of pressurized and heated water. Knowledge of all applicable state, federal, and local codes, standards, and regulations. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of welding; knowledge of the safe and proper use and handling of hazardous materials. Skill in the safe and proper use and operation of a variety of heavy equipment including backhoes, trenching machines, and truck. Skill in the proper and safe operation of a variety of hand and power tools, machines, and equipment. Skill in working in an environment subject to changing priorities. Skill in reading and interpreting plans, blue prints, and schematics for plumbing, sewer, and water systems. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Skill in understanding and following complex written and oral instructions and directions. Keep all assigned work spaces in safe, clean, and orderly condition.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)
This position is part of a collective bargaining unit upon completion of the 90-day trial period. This is an essential services position. The incumbent is required to respond after hours during emergencies and report to work for regular assigned shift during emergency campus closures. This position will typically work five (5) eight-hour days per week, either Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 am and 5:00 pm, based on staffing requirements of the department. May be required to lift equipment and materials on a constant basis. Must be able to stoop, bend, squat, sit on floor and ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs and steps in construction sites. Must be able to visually and auditory assess situations to insure safety. Must be able to climb ladder and work in restricted work spaces. Must be able to follow all safety protocols. This position requires some work outside during all seasons. Work involves exposure to exposure to hazardous materials, varying environmental conditions, constricted and unsanitary areas. Required to operate a University vehicle in day to day operations.
Other Requirements
a. Requires a valid New Mexico driver's license.
b. Must pass a Defensive Driving Course within 2 months of hire date.
