Job Summary

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (DOHNS) is among the top NIH-funded Otolaryngology programs nationally, with annual expenditures in excess of $6M and a total research budget of more than $25M. To support this large portfolio of work, DOHNS welcomes candidates for the role of Post-Award Accountant. The individual in this position will partner closely with other members of the research administration team and principal investigators to ensure the proper stewardship and management of extramural funds in support of the advancement of the department’s research mission. In addition to post-award accounting responsibilities, a portion of the responsibilities of this role will include general accounting/compliance activities in support of the department.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Key Job Responsibilities

• Provides expertise and advice related to procurement and allowable charges
• Reviews financial expenditures for accuracy on sponsored grants and contracts
• Assists principal investigators with financial management of sponsored program budgets and directs day-to-day fiscal transactions
• Prepares and processes financial reporting and/or invoicing information

In 1930, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (Oto-HNS) was added as a division within the University of Wisconsin Department of Surgery. In 2025, after decades of growth and achievement, the division became an independent department within the School of Medicine and Public Health. Oto-HNS includes seven divisions: otology and neurotology, laryngology, pediatric otolaryngology, comprehensive otolaryngology, rhinology and skull base surgery, head and neck oncologic surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. We provide a full range of state-of-the-art specialized care for adults and children at six clinical practice sites in the Madison area, and six outreach sites across Wisconsin and Illinois. Our team of nationally and internationally renowned faculty and residents prioritizes a collaborative culture, engaging with specialists across our practice sites and throughout campus. The department offers the highest quality of education to a large variety of learners, providing training to well over 100 individuals each year through clinical rotations, extramurally funded traineeships, externships and more.

Compensation

The starting salary for the position is $75,000; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications

• Experience with post-award financial management of a research program or programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least one year of experience with post-award financial management including federally sponsored grants.
• Previous UW-Madison experience
• Previous experience with Workday
• Experience in a medical school finance setting

Education

Associate’s degree in accounting or related field preferred
