Job Summary
The Focused Ultrasound Laboratory in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the University of Utah invents, develops and validates exciting image guided technologies to treat a myriad of conditions with therapeutic ultrasound. Our overall goal is to improve human health through the use of these innovative technologies.
The overall objective for this position is to work with a team that is developing innovative, non-invasive techniques to treat breast cancer with focused ultrasound mediated thermal therapies. We have invented and validated medical devices to achieve this goal that are currently in clinical trials. We have also developed multiparametric MRI protocols to accurately assess treatment outcomes in terms of treatment viability. This project aims to further advance this objective by integrating different medical imaging data types, specifically magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and pathology images, with the goal of better understanding the vascular and immune system response to focused ultrasound thermal therapies. This project leverages our lab's unique expertise and preclinical and clinical data sets that have been acquired during this development and clinical translation process. Developing imaging biomarkers that could predict thermal therapy induced immune and vascular changes could be paradigm shifting in breast cancer therapy. These tools would also be applied to other conditions, including brain cancer, pain treatment, and other pathologies.
The post-doctoral scholar will be embedded in a multi-disciplinary research team that includes faculty in radiology, pathology and computer science. The University of Utah is building a new program in integrating radiology and pathology imaging for clinical outcomes predictions. This program provides strong mentorship for a pathway to independence and opportunities for career advancement. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in computer science or related field utilizing computer science methods, strong expertise in medical image processing, registration and analysis and a long-term interest to work in the health care sector.
