Post-doctoral Fellow/ Senior Research Assistant in the Division of Restorative Dental Sciences, The Faculty of Dentistry
We now invite applications for the captioned post.
Duties and Responsibilities
The appointee will join a multidisciplinary team led by the Principal Investigator to develop AI‐driven navigation systems in robotic implant surgery. The duties include but not limited to:
- designing, implementing, and optimizing high-performance C++/C# software modules for real-time control, sensor fusion, and data analysis;
- developing unity‐based visualization and user-interaction interfaces, including 3D modelling, physics integration, and cross-platform deployment (PC, mobile, AR);
- integrating and deploying AR navigation applications on Microsoft HoloLens, covering spatial mapping, SLAM pipelines, Mixed Reality Toolkit customization, and performance tuning under hardware constraints;
- collaborating on robot motion planning, path optimization, and sensor data processing algorithms; implementing and testing ROS nodes, embedded controllers, and closed-loop control routines on prototype hardware;
- preparing technical reports, delivering presentations to stakeholders, and contributing to journal and conference publications; and
- supporting project coordination, mentoring junior research staff, and liaising with clinical or industrial partners for system integration and field trials.
Qualifications and Experience
- possess a PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline;
- demonstrate strong programming proficiency in C++ and/or C#, with a solid grasp of OOP, data structures, algorithms, and debugging tools;
- familiar with medical image processing (vtk and ITK), medical device communication protocol (OpenIGTLink) and open source medical imaging computing platform like Slicer3D;
- possess hands-on experience with Unity 3D development, including rendering, animation, UI systems, optimization, and cross-platform builds;
- experience in developing and deploying AR applications on Microsoft HoloLens, including MRTK or equivalent frameworks, SLAM integration, and user-interface design;
- show a strong theoretical and practical background in robotics and automation—specifically motion planning, path optimization, sensor fusion, or robot learning—ideally with ROS or embedded systems experience;
- proficient in written and spoken English;
- good communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills are essential;
- self–motivation and the ability to meet tight project deadlines are required;
- experience with medical device protocols, clinical validation, or collaborations with healthcare professionals will be advantageous; and
- those with lower qualifications may be appointed as Senior Research Assistant.
What We Offer
The appointment will commence as soon as possible on a temporary basis for 1 year with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. Other benefits include annual leave, medical benefits and free access to on-campus gyms and libraries.
How to Apply
The University only accepts online application for the above post. Applicants should apply online at the University’s Careers site (https://jobs.hku.hk) and upload an up-to-date C.V., including a list of publications, software projects and references, a cover letter summarizing research interests, relevant experience and availability, and sample code or links to repositories (GitHub, GitLab, etc.) demonstrating Unity, C++, C#, or AR work (optional but preferred). Review of applications will start as soon as possible and continue until September 15, 2025, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
