Offer Description
Principal investigator: Anna Maria Kubicka
Job type: post-doctoral researcher
Field: MRI, imaging segmentation, human brain mapping
Duration: 18 months with an option to extend
Funding: National Science Centre in Poland, Opus-30
Apply by: 10/21/2026

ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project, titled “Brain development in genus Homo over the last two million years,” will contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that shape neurocranial development in modern humans. The results will provide new empirical evidence on coordination between vascular growth, brain maturation, and cranial bone formation, which are the key questions in developmental and evolutionary biology.
The project is highly interdisciplinary and brings together methods from evolutionary biology, paleoneurology, virtual anthropology, computational neuroscience and neuroimaging. The OPUS project is funded by the Polish National Science Centre and will involve a team from France (Musée de l'Homme, Paris) and Spain (Valladolid University, Valladolid)
RESPONSIBILITIES
As a postdoctoral researcher in the OPUS-30 project, you will contribute to the development of MRI segmentation through an interdisciplinary collaboration. The researcher will take primary responsibility for improving skull segmentation in MRIs already collected from children and adults.
The successful candidate will conduct research on modern humans and, later, on early hominins, including early Homo, applying quantitative methods in evolutionary morphology and employing innovative analytical techniques to investigate evolutionary changes in the human brain.
