Job Summary

The global demand for Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) such as rare earth elements, cobalt, and lithium is increasing due to their role in green technologies, digital infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing. This position addresses challenges in supply chains by exploring unconventional sources like urban mining of electronic waste, extraction from industrial residues, and re-mining of extractive waste. The research focuses on innovative characterization and extraction technologies, pre-feasibility assessments for economic viability, and analysis of sustainability trade-offs to support circular economy principles.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate the viability, efficiency, and environmental impact of sourcing CRMs from unconventional sources.
  • Develop and identify innovative technologies for material characterization and extraction.
  • Collaborate with multiple faculties including Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Architecture and the Built Environment, Mechanical Engineering, and Industrial Design Engineering.
  • Contribute to the Climate Safety & Security centre (CaSS) at TU Delft, focusing on materials security.
  • Work 1 day per week at Campus The Hague and engage with researchers, policy makers, and global partners.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in sensor-based material characterization.
  • Strong knowledge of advanced data analytics and interpretation.
  • Familiarity with metal extraction and recovery techniques.
  • Working proficiency in English and strong communication skills to convey technical findings to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python.
  • A keen interest in interdisciplinary research, excellent social and teamwork skills.
  • Proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL minimum 100 or IELTS minimum 7.0) if English is not the mother language or from an English-instruction institution.

What the Employer Offers

  • A 2-year contract for 36-38 hours per week.
  • Salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, monthly work costs contribution, and flexible work schedules.
  • Support for relocation, including events to settle in the Netherlands and a Dual Career Programme for accompanying partners.
  • Opportunities to work in an internationally diverse community at TU Delft.
