Postdoc in Design for Recognition and Human Freedom
Job Summary
This postdoctoral position aims to develop a philosophical understanding of the role of design in enabling social recognition and freedom, as mediated by automated technologies, particularly AI. It explores how automation technologies mediate social encounters and recognitional justice, drawing from Hegel’s work and philosophy of technology.
Responsibilities
The researcher will explore the role of design in enabling technology-mediated recognition as a condition for human freedom. This includes reinterpreting Hegel’s reflections on recognition, contributing original perspectives, empirically connecting investigations to contemporary AI cases, contributing to scholarly debates in design, and leading the executive management of the 'Justice by Design' lab. The role involves collaborating on research proposals and grant applications.
Qualifications and Requirements
Required: A PhD in Design, Philosophy, or a related field; a strong track record of academic publications; excellent teamwork skills; and proficiency in spoken and written English. Desirable: Proficiency in Dutch and/or German; experience in writing grant applications and securing funding; and experience with interdisciplinary research and qualitative methods.
What the Employer Offers
The position is for 1.5 to 2 years, with 32-40 hours per week. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, including a customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules are available, along with support for relocation to the Netherlands.
