In the frame of the ERC consolidator UNIVOC project, the CNRS is seeking an enthusiastic postdoc specialized in atmospheric sciences. Global change is compromising the Ocean and Human Health by favoring the development of Harmful Algal Blooms in many regions worldwide. An increasing number of coastal dinoflagellate blooms are associated with respiratory disorders, threatening the health of the population. While the airborne toxic factors remain undisclosed in the majority of dinoflagellates blooms, deciphering their sea-air transfer is urgently needed. By addressing the knowledge gaps, UNIVOC aims at reshaping our vision of airborne toxicity associated with dinoflagellate blooms through the exploration of a novel paradigm, emphasizing chemical interactions within the marine microbial sphere as the primary driver. The first objective of the project will be to elucidate the nature and effects of airborne toxic factors, by combining innovative process studies and state-of-the art toxicological assays.
In particular, secondary aerosols produced during these blooms have never been investigated, though they may be associated with the airborne toxicity. In this context, the postdoc will be in charge to investigate the nature and the fluxes of secondary aerosols produced during a natural dinoflagellate bloom using Air-Sea Interface Tanks (ASIT) equipped with an in-line mass spectrometer API-Tof-MS. A one-month major field work is planned in the Basque country (French Atlantic coast) in July 2027, for which a multi-disciplinary team will be deployed (atmospheric scientists, oceanographers, toxicologists, ecologists). The post-doc will be in charge of the instrumental preparation (experimental set-up and mass spectrometer calibrations), actively participate to the field campaign, analyze and interpret the nanoparticle fluxes and properties.
