Posting Summary

The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks to hire a Post-Doctoral Research Associate. This is a one-year post-doctoral clinical research fellowship, available to psychologists and other social scientists within the behavioral health fields, interested in developing their professional trajectory within the research and clinical areas of sports, exercise, and performance psychology.

The position will highlight the intersection between conducting research and application of interventions within sports psychology, performance enhancement, and mental health concerns. This position is designed for an individual who is pursuing licensure as a psychologist and is seeking specialized training and experience in the delivery of clinical and sport psychology services for high performers, who may also be considering an academic faculty position.

Hours accrued during this fellowship can be considered supervised experience under the direction of a licensed psychologist supervisor and for AASP certification as a CMPC. The primary roles of this position include clinical, training, and research.

Clinical focuses on issues most salient to student-athletes (e.g. transition to the university, injury, disordered eating, athletic identity, career transition, and substance abuse issues); performance enhancement with individuals and teams, research responsibilities, community outreach, and LD/ADHD testing.

The onsite supervisor will be Peter J. Economou, Ph.D., ABPP who is a licensed psychologist within the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology and the Director of the Sport Psychology program within Rutgers University athletics. Additional training on neuropsychological assessment, sport concussion, and other areas of sports medicine may be available through campus partners. This training is completed with Big Ten athletes, highest level of competition within intercollegiate athletics, and research at an R1 institute.

Trainees are expected to also conduct research in areas that could range from:

  • Evidence-based practices with high performers
  • Injury prevention and recovery
  • Biofeedback, or other biological markers, and performance or mental health
  • Diversity and multicultural issues in sports
  • Organizational and systemic evaluations related to the optimal delivery of sports interventions through an interdisciplinary lens
  • Interdisciplinary interventions with sports medicine, athletics, kinesiology, and other departments

GSAPP’s commitment to diversity, social justice and helping the underserved contributes to a supportive and mission-focused training. We place a high degree of emphasis on fostering and encouraging a diverse community of faculty and students and on supporting research/practice that benefits diverse and under-served communities; applicants who can contribute in this valued direction are particularly encouraged to apply.
