Position Summary

The Department of Indigenous Studies at the University at Buffalo welcomes applications for the position of Postdoctoral Associate. Indigenous Studies scholars with expertise in a wide variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary departments are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have a strong background in the field of Indigenous studies, methodologies, ethics and practices and promise of a strong research profile. A commitment to Indigenous communities is a must. Evidence of using anti-colonial methodologies and sustained engagement with Indigenous communities is imperative to our mission. Geographic area of expertise is open, but we especially encourage applicants with research experience in the Great Lakes area.

Candidates are expected to have a completed Ph.D. in hand by September 1, 2026.

Situated in Haudenosaunee territory, UBs Indigenous Studies seeks to advance purposeful Indigenous-centered scholarship with a global impact. The Post-doctoral scholar will work closely with Mishuana Goeman, Chair of Indigenous Studies as mentor and our faculty in Indigenous Studies. We offer meaningful engagement for professional and community development. This includes grant participation, seminar and workshop opportunities, guidance in publishing research papers, presenting at our annual Storytellers Conference, and advice while on the job market.

Duties may include:

  • Work on your individual research program with the goal of publication.
  • Attend and participate in Indigenous Studies events offered throughout the academic year including, but not limited to, the annual Welcome Back BBQ, Storytellers Conference, and graduation social.
  • Run two workshops per semester for current Indigenous Studies graduate students.
  • Provide one public talk on your research open to students, faculty, staff, and UB community members.
  • Participate in classroom engagement with faculty members and their courses.

Depending on research expertise and candidates needs, we will discuss other contributions to the department and the field to add to your research and teaching portfolio. Appointment will be for one year.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Social Sciences or Humanities or a JD in American Indian Law conferred in the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Tribal Nations, communities, or organizations.

Salary Range

$48,000
