General Description

Salary: $63,460 - $100,000 per year

The Johns Hopkins University's Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics invites applicants for one or more positions as Postdoctoral Fellow. Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. prior to their appointment start date, and no later than 08/30/2026, and show definite promise in research and teaching. The teaching load will be at most one course each semester, and often as little as one course per year, depending on funding and the needs of the department, so that the appointee will have ample time for research. The appointment is for two years, with the possibility of renewal, depending on funding availability.

The successful candidate will work with Professor Nicolas Loizou on foundational and algorithmic aspects of min-max optimization, with applications to machine learning, artificial intelligence, and large-scale reinforcement learning. The project focuses on developing new mathematical foundations and efficient algorithms tailored specifically to min-max problems, moving beyond the traditional paradigm of adapting minimization methods to saddle-point settings. Research directions include stochastic min-max optimization, accelerated and anchor-type methods, alternating-update strategies, proximal-gradient-type algorithms, nonconvex min-max optimization, efficient sampling schemes, and applications to training deep neural networks. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in optimization, applied mathematics, probability, theoretical machine learning, or computational mathematics, with demonstrated interest in the analysis and design of modern large-scale learning algorithms.

Applicants are asked to submit (a) an AMS standard coversheet; (b) a curriculum vitae; (c) a description of research interests, and have at least three letters of recommendation submitted.

Applicants should apply using: https://apply.interfolio.com/184958

Additionally, the candidates should contact Professor Loizou via email at nloizou@jhu.edu , with a message containing "Postdoc_JHU_OptML_Lab" in the subject line, discussing any potential overlap of research interests with Professor Loizou.

Applications received by 06/15/2026 will be guaranteed full consideration; early application is advisable.
