About the Department

The Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University comprises ~120 staff, organized into three divisions: Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, and Computational Mathematics. The department conducts research and education at undergraduate and doctoral levels and is located on the Albano campus with modern facilities and library resources.

The Division of Computational Mathematics focuses on mathematical modelling and computational methods for studying complex systems, ranging from molecular structures to climate dynamics. Current research areas include:

  • Program logic and theorem proving
  • Computational biology and genomics
  • Numerical analysis of PDEs (e.g., ice and ocean dynamics)
  • Computational statistics and machine learning
  • Algorithm design and discrete mathematics

Project Description

The position focuses on algorithms for large-scale sequence analysis and computational genomics. The candidate will have flexibility to shape research directions, complementing ongoing projects such as:

  • Structural variation detection
  • Long-read RNA-seq processing
  • Read mapping applications in metagenomics

Applicants are encouraged to propose research ideas that extend or complement the current work.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design and implement algorithms for computational genomics
  • Develop and maintain high-performance software tools
  • Analyze simulated and real biological data
  • Collaborate across computational and biological research teams
  • Acquire sufficient molecular biology knowledge to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment

Qualification Requirements

  • Swedish doctoral degree or equivalent from another country, completed by the employment start date
  • Strong background in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or bioinformatics
  • Strong programming skills (Python, C/C++, or similar)
  • Previous experience with biological sequencing data is an advantage

Assessment criteria:

  • Research skills and relevance of scientific background
  • Doctoral degree obtained within 3 years prior to application is an advantage (older degrees considered under special circumstances, e.g., parental leave, sick leave)

  • Full-time employment (100%)
  • Duration: 2–3 years, with possible extension under special circumstances
  • Employment at Stockholm University, with individual salary setting
