The Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Unit (NDRS), part of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow in neurogenomics and computational biology.
Laboratory description
The NDRS, headed by Dr. Sonja W. Scholz, is an internationally recognized neurogenetics laboratory located at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD, USA. Our research program focuses on understanding the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying complex neurodegenerative diseases, including Lewy body dementia, multiple system atrophy, frontotemporal dementia, and other rare diseases. As part of the NIH Intramural Research Program, the laboratory provides access to a uniquely collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment, state-of-the-art sequencing technologies, large-scale genomic and multi-omic datasets, high-performance computational resources, and extensive expertise in human genetics, bioinformatics, and translational neuroscience.
Our long-term goal is to identify the genetic and molecular factors that influence disease risk, progression, and clinical heterogeneity, and to leverage genomic and multi-omic technologies to develop novel biomarkers and precision medicine approaches for neurodegenerative disorders. Current research projects integrate genome-wide association studies (GWAS), whole-genome sequencing, transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and functional genomic analyses.
Fellowship description
We are searching for an enthusiastic, collaborative, and intellectually curious scientist to join our team. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to innovative research projects involving large-scale genomic and multi-omic data analysis in neurodegenerative diseases.
The fellow will be expected to:
- Perform computational analyses of genomic and other omic datasets for gene discovery.
- Contribute to the design and interpretation of translational and functional studies.
- Present research findings at national and international scientific meetings.
- Contribute to a collaborative team science environment.
The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in the genetics and biology of neurodegenerative disease and a desire to work at the interface of genomics, bioinformatics, and translational neuroscience.
Required qualifications
- M.D. or Ph.D. (or M.D., Ph.D.) in a relevant life science discipline
- Experience analyzing next-generation sequencing and/or GWAS datasets
- Experience in data visualization
- Knowledge and experience in bioinformatic programming using Linux, R, and Python
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both oral and written
- The ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative research environment
