Postdoctoral Position in Marine Mammal Health and Biology
Job Summary
Contribute to understanding marine mammal health by studying the biology and ecology of marine top predators in the Stranding Research Programme at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The role involves investigating causes of death, health status, and anthropogenic threats like bycatch and pollution to support conservation efforts in the North Sea ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Co-design and co-lead innovative research on marine mammal health and mortality.
- Analyze large datasets from post-mortem investigations and related environmental factors.
- Apply advanced data analysis techniques such as R, Python, or Machine Learning to identify patterns in biological factors, disease, and mortality.
- Co-supervise and mentor PhD candidates, MSc, and BSc students.
- Collaborate with national and international partners, including researchers and NGOs.
- Secure external research funding by writing grant applications and developing proposals.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
- Communicate research outcomes to academic and non-academic audiences, including policymakers.
Qualifications and Requirements
- PhD in marine biology, ecology, or a related field.
- Experience in marine mammal research, particularly in data collection and statistical analysis.
- Strong quantitative skills with experience in R, Python, or Machine Learning.
- Proven ability to acquire research funding; experience with Dutch National and EU grants is advantageous.
- Previous experience with data from strandings or post-mortem investigations is advantageous.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to work independently and in a team, and strong communication skills in scientific writing.

- A job for 18 months with possible extension.
- Working week of 28-36 hours with a gross monthly salary between €3,546 and €5,538.
