Postdoctoral Research Associate - Biochemistry for TB Drug Discovery and Development

Postdoctoral Research Associate - Biochemistry for TB Drug Discovery and Development

Department: Department of Chemistry, Chemistry Research Laboratory, 12 Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3TA

The INEOS Oxford Institute for Antimicrobial Research (IOI) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biochemistry to join an ambitious research programme focused on the development of new treatments for tuberculosis. This position forms part of the recently funded Oxford TB Grand Challenge, which brings together expertise across the University of Oxford to address TB through collaborative, multidisciplinary research. The post will be based at IOI and supervised by Dr Alistair Farley, Scientific Lead for Chemistry.

This post is fixed term for 2 years.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, development and execution of biochemical and biophysical assays to identify and evaluate inhibitors targeting mycobacterial proteins. Working closely with chemists, structural biologists, microbiologists and immunologists at Oxford, as well as with external partners, the postholder will contribute to hypothesis-driven research, data analysis and assay development within an integrated drug discovery framework. The role also involves managing independent research activities, contributing to high-quality publications, presenting findings at scientific meetings, and actively participating in journal clubs and collaborative projects. Mentoring junior researchers and contributing to teaching activities will form part of the wider academic role.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in Biochemistry or a related discipline, with a strong record of independent research demonstrated through publications or work in progress. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, organised and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, with excellent communication skills and a commitment to rigorous laboratory practice. Experience in protein science, enzyme assay development, antimicrobial drug discovery or mycobacterial systems would be advantageous, as would familiarity with biophysical methods, high-throughput approaches or pharmaceutical research environments.

IOI offers a dynamic, inclusive and collaborative research culture with a strong commitment to training, career development and research excellence. This role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to high-impact research addressing tuberculosis and antimicrobial resistance with real potential to improve global health.
