Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computer Science

The Theory Group in the Department of Computer Science at Brown University is seeking applicants for Postdoctoral Research Associates, with a focus on graph algorithms and/or theoretical machine learning. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work closely with Professors Ellis Hershkowitz, Yu Cheng, and Eli Upfal, and to engage broadly with the theory community at Brown.

For this position, Brown offers only the J-1 visa classification to scholars who need immigration sponsorship in order to enter the U.S. and commence lawful employment under the terms of their appointment.

Brown University is located in Providence, Rhode Island – a historic, creative, and highly livable city with a thriving food, arts, and academic scene. Providence offers the charm of a smaller city with easy access to major research hubs, including Boston, which is just an hour away by train or car.

The initial appointment will be for one year starting in Fall 2026, with the possibility of renewal for one additional year by mutual agreement and based on need and on availability of funds. Applicants must have a PhD in Computer Science or a related field (to be completed by the start date).
