The post holders will join the DEEPSCAPE group in the Department of Earth Sciences to work on the PRISM-MTZ project funded by NERC. This project aims to quantitatively image the bulk structure and discontinuity topographies of the mantle transition zone (MTZ), to quantify trade-offs between these and to deduce fluxes of heat and material across the MTZ.
The post holders will be responsible for compiling seismic data sets (focusing on surface-wave overtones and body-wave data including precursors), computing sensitivity kernels and applying the BG-SOLA method to infer the properties of the MTZ. They will adapt existing and develop new seismic analysis and inverse methodologies within a finite-frequency framework and analysing the resulting images including uncertainty and resolution information. The post holders will also be responsible for working with interdisciplinary experts to interpret the seismological constraints.
The successful candidates will hold or be close to completion of a PhD/DPhil in seismology (thesis must be submitted before an offer is made). They should have relevant experience in analysis and inversions of seismic data and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes. They will also be expected to manage their own academic research and associated activities and have previous experience of contributing to publications. They must also have excellent communication skills, including the ability to present research proposals and results and represent the group at meetings.
This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 30 months. (flexible start date between 1st Oct 2026 and 1st Jan 2027).
The deadline for applications is midday on 20 May 2026, and interviews are expected to take place 10-12th June 2026. Please quote 185944 on all correspondence.
