Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organic Semiconductors for Sustainable Solar Energy Conversion

About the Role

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and motivated Research Associate to join our research team in the Centre of Sustainable Engineering in the School of Engineering and Material Science. The research is concerned with understanding structure-property-performance relationships of organic and hybrid semiconductor heterojunctions and using that understanding to develop better performing devices for sustainable solar energy conversion (e.g. solar cells or photo(electrochemical) devices). The post is based in the group of Dr Flurin Eisner as part of an EPSRC funded grant and will make use of the brand-new fabrication facilities in the School’s Green Energy Hub and state-of-the-art characterisation equipment in our labs. The research associate will be responsible for designing and carrying out experimental measurements of the materials and devices, writing up results for publication, and helping with the organisation of research.

The position is for 36 months, starting in December 2025 (there is flexibility in the start-date).

About You

The successful candidate will hold (or be closing to obtaining) a PhD in the Physical or Chemical Sciences (or a related field). They will have a background in carried out research on organic semiconductors (or related solution-processable semiconductors), either for photovoltaic, photodetection or photo(electrochemical) applications. Previous experience with spectroscopic or optoelectronic characterisation techniques is desirable. The candidate will have a good track-record of writing publications, developing their own research ideas, working independently to analyse and solve problems, and a willingness to engage with and lead collaborations.

About our Group

You will be joining the group of Dr Flurin Eisner, which focuses on developing solution-processable semiconductor devices for sustainable solar energy conversion and storage. Flurin’s research is highly interdisciplinary, spanning Physics, Chemistry and Engineering, and he is interested in probing fundamental processes in materials and devices, and then using that knowledge to develop better performing and more sustainable technologies. The group is highly collaborative, working with leading academics from the UK and internationally. Recent work from the group relevant to the role can be found in the following publications: Nature Energy (2025), Nature Chemistry (2024) and ACS Energy Letters (2023). More information can be found on our group website.
