About the opportunity

The Sydney Pharmacy School is a globally recognised leading centre for pharmacy education. With over 100 years of excellence in education, we are proud to be training the next generation of pharmacists who will be leaders and innovators in their fields of practice. In 2023, we implemented two innovated integrated pharmacy degrees with increased work integrated learning opportunities. Our teams of researchers lead key internationally competitive research from molecules to medicines, from patient to policy, across a range of therapeutic areas.

The University seeking to employee a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate (Medication Safety and Opioid Stewardship) (Level A) to join A/Prof Jonathan Penm's research team at the University of Sydney. The successful candidate will contribute to nationally funded projects focused on medication safety in hospital pharmacy to improve transitions of care and post-operative pain management.

This role will involve working on clinical trials, as well as contributing to the development of data-driven interventions and stewardship models to enhance patient outcomes after surgery.

This position is an opportunity to work with a globally recognised leader in hospital pharmacy and opioid stewardship, access to rich datasets and collaborations across major hospitals and research networks and supportive career development, including mentorship and leadership opportunities.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead and support research projects including clinical trials and routinely collected data
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and analysis of clinical trials and observational studies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including pharmacists, anaesthetists, surgeons, and data scientists
  • Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences
  • Supervise and mentor research students
  • Grant writing and ethics submissions
  • contributes to the strategic direction of the Faculty/School/Portfolio as articulated through the Faculty/School/Portfolio's Strategic Plan/s or equivalent
  • contribute to project design, biosafety and ethics applications, grant and funding request preparation, and reporting of findings in scientific and community fora
  • undertake other duties and contribute to projects appropriate within the classification level as required.

About you

  • A PhD in pharmacy, pharmacoepidemiology, clinical pharmacology, public health, or a related field
  • Experience working with large health datasets and statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, STATA)
  • Strong publication and grant record in clinical pharmacy, pain management, or health services research.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills
  • A passion for improving medication safety and patient outcomes

Desirable:

  • Experience in clinical trials or registry-based studies
  • Knowledge of clinical pharmacy, opioid stewardship and post-operative pain management
  • Familiarity with Australian healthcare systems and data sources
