Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the role

The Department of Biology, University of Oxford is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) on 20 months' project funded by a grant to Prof Filatov from the BBSRC. The project will focus on the analysis of sex chromosome evolution, but may also extent to evolution of other types of chromosomes (e.g. B-chromosomes) mainly in plants. The PDRA will be encouraged to collaborate on other related projects to help improve their publication record and maximize the chances of future employability in academia. The PDRA on this project will be responsible for lab work, data analysis and preparation of papers for publication. Most of the work in the project is expected to be computer-based, with the focus on evolutionary genetic analyses of genome and transcriptome sequence data.

About you

Depending on PDRA’s preference, the project could include molecular genetic and cytogenetic work; thus, experience in experimental plant molecular biology (in addition to essential evolutionary genetic and bioinformatic experience) will be an advantage. The applicants should have or be expected to soon obtain a PhD or equivalent and publication record in evolutionary genetics/genomics and molecular genetics. Significant experience in population genetic and genetic high throughput data analysis will be essential for this project. It will be advantageous for the successful applicant to have previous work experience related to chromosome evolution, especially to sex chromosome evolution.

How to apply

The University of Oxford is committed to equal opportunity, and to being a place where everyone belongs and is supported to succeed. Frequently Asked Questions

🎓What are the key eligibility requirements for this Postdoctoral Research Associate role?

Applicants must hold or be near completion of a PhD in evolutionary genetics, genomics, or molecular genetics with a strong publication record. Essential experience includes population genetic analysis and high-throughput data analysis. Advantageous skills include chromosome evolution research, especially sex chromosome evolution in plants.

📝How do I apply for the Postdoctoral Research Associate position at Oxford?

Applications must be submitted online via the University of Oxford e-recruitment system by 12:00 noon on 29 June 2026. Upload a supporting statement and CV. The role is full-time and available immediately. See how to write a winning academic CV for guidance.

🔬What research focus areas will the Postdoctoral Research Associate work on?

The project centres on sex chromosome evolution (primarily in plants) but may extend to other chromosomes such as B-chromosomes. Work is largely computer-based involving evolutionary genetic analyses of genome and transcriptome data, with optional molecular and cytogenetic lab components.

🌱Is prior experience in plant molecular biology required for this role?

No, it is not essential but is advantageous. The role requires core expertise in evolutionary genetics and bioinformatics. Molecular genetic or cytogenetic experience in plants can strengthen an application and broaden project scope.

📈What career development opportunities does this Postdoctoral Research Associate position offer?

The PDRA will be encouraged to collaborate on related projects to enhance their publication record and improve future employability in academia. See postdoctoral success tips and research assistant career advice.
