Postdoctoral Research Associate - Radiology
Position Summary
This post-doctoral job posting is for an R01 funded position to conduct parcellation of non-neocortical brain structures into well-defined brain areas using multiple MRI modalities, including task-based and resting state functional MRI, T1 and T2-weighted structural MRI, and diffusion MRI.
The post-doc will parcellate the hippocampus and cerebellum using surface-based methods and the globular subcortical nuclei using volume-based methods. The post-doc will use a semi-automated gradient-based approach, akin to the approach used in the Human Connectome Project’s multi-modal neocortical parcellation (Glasser et al., 2016 Nature).
The post-doc will be co-mentored by Matthew F. Glasser MD/PhD and David C. Van Essen PhD and be based in the Glasser/Van Essen laboratory in the WashU Radiology Department. The selected candidate will have access to the HCP’s large consortium of world experts in multiple neuroimaging domains and ample opportunities to publish research methods and scientific findings in high impact academic journals and at premier scientific conferences.
The Glasser/Van Essen lab’s senior staff are highly experienced, having developed much of the HCP’s software themselves, and are excellent at training new users of HCP-Style brain imaging methods.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Trains under the supervision of a faculty mentor including (but not limited to):
- Learn to conduct brain imaging research with surface-based analyses methods and the HCP-Style approach to brain imaging acquisition.
- Conduct parcellation of non-neocortical brain structures into well-defined brain areas using multiple MRI modalities.
- Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
- Prepares and submits papers on research.
- Assists in the design of research experiments.
- Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of the results.
- Conscientious discharge of their research responsibilities.
- Maintains conformity with ethical standards in research.
- Maintains compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.
- Engages in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
- Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
- Adherence to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.
Working Conditions:
This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
Salary Range:
Base pay is commensurate with experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive neuroanatomical experience with multiple MRI modalities, including functional MRI, diffusion MRI, and invasive connectivity methods such as tracer data. Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of these topics, for example, by creating an online brain atlas website incorporating this data.
- Extensive computer coding experience.
- Extensive independent teaching experience and excellent communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
