Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Associate

The Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Fellow to participate in the Past to Future, Toward Fully Paleo-Informed Future Climate Projections project. The successful applicant will undertake research in the general area of the relation between past and future climates. The project is part of a large collaboration involving institutions in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Spain and elsewhere. The project at Exeter will involve using global climate models to understand the sensitivity of the climate to poorly understood physical processes and parameterizations, thereby coming to a better understanding of the degree to which warm past climates such as the Eocene and Pliocene may be used as analogues of future climates. Areas of study may include the sensitivity and structural stability of the climate with respect to physical processes and parameterizations governing such things as clouds and convection, ocean heat transport and continental configurations. Beyond this, there is much scope for the research fellow to develop their own ideas. The successful candidate will work at Exeter with Dr Hugo Lambert and Professor Geoffrey Vallis and will be expected to interact with scientists across the wider Past-to-Future project.

This Horizon Europe funded post is a full-time contract beginning May 2025 running until 4th May 2027.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals and make presentations at conferences and other events. Applicants will possess a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a climate-related field, including mathematics, physics or engineering. The successful applicant will have a strong quantitative background in the atmospheric, oceanic or climate sciences, ideally with experience in numerical modelling. Exceptional candidates with no experience in climate but who have a strong background in physics, engineering or a closely-related field and who are wishing to change fields into climate sciences will also be considered. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively.
