Postdoctoral Research Fellow

About This Opportunity

Join The University of Queensland (UQ) as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and contribute to the ARC Future Fellowship project “After the Future of Work: Platformised Labour in a Hotter Australia”, led by Dr Luke Munn.

The project investigates how digital labour platforms—often framed as the future of work—intersect with Australia’s changing climate, especially rising heat conditions. It aims to understand worker experiences, uncover key pressures, and propose climate-aware frameworks for better work.

This role will focus on the ethnographic component of the project, coordinating and analysing “worker stories” from surveys, social media, and interviews with workers, unions, and industry representatives. You’ll also contribute to theorising and publishing insights, helping shape new conversations on climate, technology, and labour in Australia.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinate and collect worker stories through surveys, reports, and online forums.
  • Conduct in-depth interviews with workers, organisers, and industry representatives.
  • Analyse and code empirical data using project-specific frameworks.
  • Contribute to research publications and dissemination in high-impact outlets.
  • Support knowledge translation and engagement with research end-users.
  • Contribute to supervision of Honours and HDR students as appropriate.
  • Promote the findings and outcomes of the project within academic and public forums.

About You

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD in Media, Cultural, or Social Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Research experience in one or more of the following areas: labour studies, ethnography, technology, or environmental issues.
  • Proven skills in qualitative research and working with human participants.
  • Emerging track record of publications and research collaboration.
  • Ability to build networks with workers, unions, and industry representatives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative research team.

You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment.
