Contract/project period: 12 months Expected date of employment: 01/04/2027
Proportion of work: full time
Workplace: ICube UMR 7357 (équipe MLMS), Inria (équipe NECTARINE)

ICube UMR 7357 (équipe MLMS), Inria (équipe NECTARINE)
Date of publication: 29/09/2026
Closing date for the receipt of applications: 27/10/2026
Research project or operation
A postdoctoral position in neurostimulation is available as part of the NINO project, funded by the University of Strasbourg's IdEx initiative and conducted jointly by ICube (MLMS team) and Inria (NECTARINE team).
This research project supports the creation of the new NECTARINE project team and aims to develop non-invasive neurostimulation methods for future applications in clinical psychiatry.
Activities
Description of the research activities:
Neuromodulation encompasses various techniques used to stimulate the brain and alleviate symptoms of mental disorders or attention deficits; given the large number of patients who could benefit, it offers promising prospects for clinical applications. However, neuromodulation is typically implemented in an open-loop manner, where experimental parameters are set a priori and may prove suboptimal. Here, we propose developing optimal experimental design (OED) techniques and applying them to closed-loop neuromodulation by adapting parameters in real time. Our closed-loop algorithms will enable the optimization of stimulation delivery, help avoid the side effects associated with pharmacological treatments, and pave the way for computer-assisted personalized medicine. This position is offered for a duration of 12 months.
Skills
Qualifications/knowledge:
The successful candidate will be responsible for: 1) analyzing EEG data recorded from human participants during a Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) to understand the underlying cognitive mechanisms; 2) proposing closed-loop optimization methods for neurostimulation parameters; and 3) formulating closed-loop neurostimulation as a reinforcement learning problem. Proficiency with the MNE (Python) and EEGLAB (Matlab) toolboxes will be considered an asset.
Personal qualities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong team-working skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with others.
Environment and context of work
Presentation of the laboratory/unity:
The successful candidate will join the newly established Inria NECTARINE team, which focuses primarily on neuromodulation and its application to psychiatric disorders. The team leader, Axel Hutt (Research Director), possesses extensive expertise in neuromodulation, EEG experimentation, and time-series analysis. The team is also part of a network that includes experimental collaborators such as Philippe Isope (CNRS Research Director), Anne Bonnefond (University Professor), and Anne Giersch (INSERM Research Director). These collaborators have already shared datasets with us for offline analysis, notably EEG recordings obtained from human subjects.
Hierarchical relationship: Camille Gontier is the project manager and will supervise the person recruited.
