Postdoctoral Research Scientist

The Cruz-Acuña Lab integrates biomaterials engineering, cell and molecular biology, and 3D organoid systems to investigate how extracellular matrix (ECM) properties regulate tissue development, cellular plasticity, and disease progression. The lab is particularly interested in understanding how cell–ECM interactions contribute to epithelial metaplasia, tissue remodeling, and tumorigenesis, as well as identifying fundamental mechanisms governing developmental patterning and organogenesis.

We are currently recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with a strong interest in studying the mechanistic and translational aspects of cell–matrix biology in human disease. The successful candidate will employ a combination of classic molecular and cell biology approaches, engineered biomaterial platforms (including synthetic and tunable hydrogels), patient-derived and human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived 3D organoid models, and in vivo xenograft systems.

This position offers the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research at the interface of engineering and biomedical sciences. The work is expected to yield both fundamental biological insights and clinically relevant advances by defining how matrix properties influence pathological cell states and by informing the development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting the extracellular microenvironment.

The Cruz-Acuña Lab is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive research environment that values different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds.

Columbia University is a leader in biomedical research and is home to an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center provides outstanding shared research infrastructure, including 12 core facilities that support basic, translational, and clinical cancer research. The postdoctoral researcher will have full access to these state-of-the-art resources.

Minimum Degree Required

  • Ph.D., MD, or equivalent doctoral degree

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent experimental and analytic skills and willingness to learn the new model system and methodologies.
  • Self-motivated with a strong interest in studying the mechanistic and translational aspects of gastrointestinal diseases.
  • Effective communication and writing skills and record of publication in a peer-reviewed journal(s).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in biomaterial (hydrogel) synthesis and characterization (recommended, not required).
  • Prior work with 3D culture systems, organoids, or in vivo models is a plus.
