The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University (WVU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher. Under the leadership of Duncan Lorimer, the incumbent in this position will conduct research in the field of Physics & Astronomy. This is a full-time, 9-month, benefits-eligible position.
This position will carry out research into pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs) using data collected from astronomical instruments and carry out statistical analyses of the datasets to make inferences about the nature of both these sources. Examples of projects include searches for pulsars and FRBs, high-precision timing of pulsars and tests of fundamental physics.
Responsibilities
- Supervise undergraduate and graduate students working on pulsar/FRB projects.
- Carry out original FRB research using GREENBURST experiment at Green Bank Observatory.
- Carry out original pulsar research as part of the NANOGrav collaboration to search for and characterize low-frequency gravitational waves using pulsar timing techniques.
- Carry out independent research projects which complement work being done at the WVU Center for Gravitational Waves and Cosmology.
Qualifications
Professional Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Physics and/or Astronomy is required.
- In addition, the successful applicant must have:
- Five (5) years of graduate school
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to do time-series analysis on astronomical data.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out frequentist and Bayesian statistical analyses of data.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise students.
- Demonstrated ability to write software to carry out data analysis techniques, as needed.
The successful candidate may be permitted to begin employment prior to degree confirmation with a letter certifying the trainee has completed all degree requirements from their university.
